Loop diuretics not associated with bone mineral density, falls or fractures in postmenopausal women

Summary <>In postmenopausal women, use of loop diuretics is not associated with changes in bone mineral density, falls or fractures. However, women who used them for >3 years do have a higher risk of fracture.

Basis for Study <>This study evaluated whether the use of loop diuretics by postmenopausal women was associated with changes in bone mineral density, falls or fractures.

Detailed Summary of Study <> As part of the Women's Health Initiative, information on BMD, falls and fractures was collected from 133,855 women (3,411 of them were users of loop diuretics). Follow-up was a mean of 7.7 years.

Results/Body <> After adjusting for confounding variables, no significant association was found between use of loop diuretics (current or past) and changes in BMD or total, hip, and clinical vertebral fractures. However, an increased risk was found for other clinical fractures and total fractures in women who had used loop diuretics for more than 3 years.
